Introduced in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the single TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained running.
